On 24th March 2016, a one-day international event “Symposium on Capacity Building in Sustainable Resource Development in Africa” was held at the embassy of Japan in Nairobi, Kenya. It was hosted by JSPS Nairobi Research Station in cooperation with the Akita University and Embassy of Japan in Kenya. Report:Symposium on Tropical and Infectious Diseases Held in Nairobi. 14-15 January 2016

During the period of 14-15 January 2016, a two-pronged international symposium program was held in Nairobi, Kenya: One was “The First Symposium for Innovate Network for Pan-African Surveillance of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and Infectious Diseases,” hosted by Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Nagasaki University, and supported by Japan’s Ministry of Education and Science (MEXT) and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). Report:The Second Maasai Olympic Symposium “Competition for Wildlife Conservation”(6th March, 2015)

  On 6 March, the JSPS Nairobi Research Station cosponsored a symposium with the Embassy of Japan in Kenya. Held at the Embassy, its theme was “The 2nd Maasai Olympics Symposium: Competition for Wildlife Conservation?.” The Maasai people have for long years practiced their cultural rite of passage to manhood by hunting and killing lions. However, this traditional practice has become detrimental to the conservation of lions, which are now on the brink of extinction. In order to protect wildlife, the Maasai have replaced their lion hunt with an athletic competition, the Maasai Olympics. Above grant of JSPS is now calling for application.  The deadline is 3- 7 September 2012 for the first recruitment, and 2-10 May 2013 for the second recruitment. The 2nd Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize Call for Nominations

The purpose of the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize is to honour individuals with outstanding achievements in the fields of medical research and medical services to combat infectious and other diseases in Africa and through such work have contributed to the health and welfare of African people and all humankind.  The prize consists of 2 categories: Medical Research and Medical Services. JSPS is entrusted by the Japanese Government with the operation of the prize for medical research. Report: Seminar on People Living with HIV/AIDS in Kitale (Rift Valley, Kenya)

Under the de-centralization in sub-Saharan African countries, more and more people pays attention to the significance of the roles for each community and the initiative of rural societies.  To seek such theme, high priority should be put not only on streamlization of administration but also on sensitization of the people through scientific knowledge in grassroots level. Program Summary -BRIDGE Fellowship Launched for JSPS Alumni Members- To date, JSPS alumni associations have been established in 11 countries and regions: Germany, France, the UK, the US, Sweden, India, Egypt, East Africa (Kenya), Korea, Bangladesh, and Finland. Each of these associations works to maintain and strengthen scientific exchange between its host country or region and Japan.
