Concept:
Endurance running is increasingly garnering attention from different stakeholders for its potential roles in creating positive changes for both individuals and societies. Although widely discussed across various academic fields, effective cross-disciplinary communication remains limited. This presents several challenges, for instance, in understanding the advantages and disadvantages of talent development in competitive contexts or youth development in general education systems, the commercialization of sports and its impact on local life, and emerging initiatives in Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) fields that utilize endurance running to address developmental issues. In East Africa and Asia in particular, our understanding of the historical and sociocultural significance of endurance running as both sport and physical culture continues to evolve, taking local cosmologies and norms into account. Scientific studies of this sport among populations in both continents—spanning exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sport psychology—provide new insights that challenge Western-centric knowledge construction in these fields. Together, these findings raise important questions about previously generalized assumptions regarding human health and development.
In response to the aforementioned needs, this symposium brings together researchers and practitioners from different disciplines in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Japan to exchange knowledge, good practices, and challenges in the field of endurance running. In Particular, we explore the pedagogical roles of this sport across various educational contexts, including, formal education, mass education, competitive events, and tourism.
The academic exchanges in sport research under the KU-UT collaboration was initiated in 2018. Since then, the team has organized several international symposiums, with the primary goal of fostering cross-boundary communication and knowledge sharing across Africa and Asia. This symposium marks the fifth edition, focusing particularly on endurance running—one of the most popular sport topics in both continents. We anticipate that this academic exchange will lead to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of this sport and provide productive and valuable recommendations for policymaking and education, leveraging endurance running to promote positive changes in youth health and wellness.
